Your chance to discover how people lived and died in Assynt

Wednesday 24th August, 7.30pm, Elphin Village Hall AOC’s John Barber and Graeme Cavers will introduce the project’s second phase of excavations. Excavations at Loch Borralan East Chambered Cairn.  Volunteers of all ages are invited to participate. No previous experience is required, tools and training will be provided, and it’s free to take part. Please wear sturdy shoes/boots, dress for the weather, and bring enough to eat and drink.

Wednesday 31st August, 10am       Soils Description, Identification & Recording
Learn about the ways in which we interpret archaeological soils.

Saturday 3rd September            Guided Walk and Evening Lecture:                             Temples and/or Tombs? .
As part of Scottish Archaeology Month, John Barber will lead a guided walk, meeting at the excavations at Loch Borralan at 10.30am. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring a packed lunch. This will be followed by a talk on megalithic architecture at 7.30pm at Old Kirk, Inchnadamph.

Learn more about how we understand and record archaeological deposits.

Saturday 24th September, 10am-4pm       Experimental Archaeology: Pottery
Learn how kilns were built in the past. We hope to fire pots made from local clay.

5th October (7.30pm) Life and Death in Assynt’s Past will report back on the Loch Borrolan dig and the results of the Neolithic pottery making.

Report on Neolithic Pottery Day                                                                                          Wednesday, 7 September saw a highly successful Intergenerational event making ‘pots’ in the Neolithic way using Elphin Clay to be fired on Chicken Day on 24 September.

A brilliant day was had by all. Especial thanks to Brenda who led the day and will oversee the building of the kiln and firing the ‘pots’ on Chicken Day.
